Playing the Djembe
The first song of the trimester that we learn is a Nigerian Folk Song, "Frekoba." This song is about the Rhino. Students learn 5 different drum parts to the song. The ostinato patterns we use to learn the song are:
1. "Rhino stomping. Rhino stomping.
2. "Rhino running in the water. Snort! Snort!"
3. "Rhino stepping on my toes. Ouch! That really hurts!"

The Musical Keyboard
The musical keyboard (piano) is an instrument that every musician should have some familiarity with. Students will study the basic elements of pitch through this instrument. Students should use the Flash Piano if they do not have a piano or any other keyboard instrument at home. Flash Piano can be accessed by clicking HERE.
Homemade Drums
Students learn about rhythmic patterns through the study and performance of world percussion. We focus on playing the Djembe, a Western African drum. Please click HERE to open a page on how to make a drum at home.
